As the Vineyard family ventures further into the woods in search of the perfect campsite, Richard teeters on the edge of sanity. And it seems that the blood-crazed demon called the Jersey Devil may no longer be just a myth. Special Effects Makeup Intensive starting June 11!!

This June, the Kansas City Horror Club will be hosting a series of seminars at the Westport Coffeehouse Theater taught by special effects makeup artist Micah Williams, a graduate of the Tom Savini School of Special Effects.

I spent many hours in the chair with Micah. He's amazing!

This series will take you through the entire process of creating latex appliances, and will give you all the information you need to create your own makeup effects (i.e. materials lists, and a list of links to shop online), and you'll be able to watch practical demonstrations of each part of the process, and learn tricks of the trade that you won't find anywhere else! This is how the pro's do it!

We'll be offering this series for the incredibly low cost of $30 for all three seminars! Class size is limited, so reserve your seat ASAP!!

The Hunger Games

March 25, 2012 at the Cinemark Merriam. We will meet in the theater lobby at 4:00 PM for the 4:50 PM showing. Remember it is only $4.00. Bring your teens - they probably read the books. Even though this film is not strictly horror genre there are horrific elements to the story. Plus if you are planning on going to KICK ME: The Flesh and Blood Show at the Screenland Crossroads on 3/24/12 you will get a chance to see Battle Royale. After seeing Battle Royale you can compare it to The Hunger Games which has a similar story line.

Every year in the ruins of what was once North America, the evil Capitol of the nation of Panem forces each of its twelve districts to send a teenage boy and girl to compete in the Hunger Games. A twisted punishment for a past uprising and an ongoing government intimidation tactic, The Hunger Games are a nationally televised event in which "Tributes" must fight with one another until one survivor remains. St. Patrick's Day with Leprechauns

We will have a potluck followed by the viewing of two Leprechaun movies on March 17, 2012. The potluck will start at 4 PM. If you know what you plan on bringing for the potluck please post. Remember you cannot bring drinks to this event. The theater has drinks for sale including alcoholic ones. The first movie Leprechaun will start at 5 PM and the second movie Leprechaun in the Hood will start at approximately 7 PM. The price for both movies is $10.00.

Let's see another ghost movie!

We will meet in the lobby to mingle at 2PM for the 2:50 showing on February 19 at the Cinemark Merriam This movie is in RealD 3D so the price is $6.75. Nicolas Cage reprises his role as Johnny Blaze in Ghost Rider Spirit of Vengeance. In this gritty new vision for the character, directed by Neveldine/Taylor (Crank), Johnny is still struggling with his curse as the devil's bounty hunter - but he may risk everything as he teams up with the leader of a group of rebel monks (Idris Elba) to save a young boy from the devil... and possibly rid himself of his curse forever. -- (C) Sony

The Woman in Black, Feb. 12!!

Join The Kansas City Horror Club on Sunday, February 12 for a screening of The Woman in Black at the Merriam Cinemark. Screening time has yet to be announced, but we'll be seeing a matinee as usual, [and we will meet at 2:00 pm in the theater lobby for a mingle before the 3:50 screening.]

Ti West Double Feature/Potluck Extravaganza!

Ooooooh. You're in for a TREAT! But not just one treat. Two? Nay. Three then? YES. Three treats.

Fear With Us at Screenland Crossroads on Friday, February 3, at 7:00pm, as we start our evening with a potluck dinner before we watch a Ti West double feature.

The potluck pretty much speaks for itself, bring a dish, eat 'til you can't, but you may ask, "Who in the severed head of Daniel Pearl is Ti West?" I'd be happy to tell you.

Well to be fair there were a couple before that, but that's what we'll be starting with. A delightfully dark nod to the slasher films of the 1980's. Horror Club saw this once before, but we think it merits another look. It was surprisingly good. We'll start it after the potluck, at 8:00. Here's the trailer...

At 10:00, we'll be seeing West's latest film. Apparently, it's a ghost story about a couple of Inkeepers. Perhaps the Trailer can tell us more...

And that's gonna be our Friday night!!

The fun starts at 7:00, though you should arrive a bit early if you're bringing food. The meal is free, and the movies are just $10 for both! Adult beverages can be purchased in the lobby, which will help when protecting your sweetie from them bad ol' ghosts.

Zombies Got Talent!!

"Are you a 'dead' ringer for a celebrity? Are you a karaoke cadaver? a klown with a killer act? a stiff that does stand up? Circus Freaks and Sideshow Geeks!! Whatever your special talent may be, Monday night, June 27th is YOUR night to shine!"

June's Zombie madness continues with a Zombie themed fundraiser for Mark Manley's new film, "Zombie Flick." It will shoot this summer in the Kansas City area.

I spoke with Mark, a long time Horror Club member, a couple days ago and he gave me the rundown on what this film is going to be like, and while I don't want to give out any spoilers, I can say that you haven't seen a film like this.

Ever.

The scope of "Zombie Flick" goes far beyond ordinary film making. His vision will completely immerse his audience in a way that I've never seen attempted, but always wanted to see.

ZOMBIES GOT TALENT will be held at Sidekicks Saloon at 3707 Main, KCMO. You have to be 21 to enter. Admission will be a donation of non-perishable food items that will go to the Bishop Sullivan Center on behalf of the Kansas City Zombie Walk for Hunger.

The event will be hosted by Kansas City's beloved Ron Magee, and talent will be judged by Horror Club's Curtis Smith, Zombie Queen Jamie King, and the very lovely and super talented Daisy Bucket!

Show starts at 11:00 pm, and yes, I'm aware that it's a Monday, but there's always time to get in a nap before having the time of your life!

TOPEKA'S SLASH AND BASH FILM FESTIVAL RETURNS!!!!!!

It's next weekend, JUNE 24, 25, and 26, and it's ABSOLUTELY FREE!!!!!!!!!

A lot of you may remember the last one in 2009. We got to meet and hang with Adrianne Barbeau, and Horror Club had a room party that was pretty cool.

Well, we had to skip a year because Keith Van Sickle, our benevolent and bad-ass host, had a stroke. And then another stroke. And then another stroke. But sometimes, thankfully, death is a tease, and Keith chose not to run the festival from the grave. I'm sure most of you know, there's no room to type effectively inside a coffin. Even the expensive ones. Which, by the way, is why the Ukrainian Vampire Defense Administration added "Social Networking" to the list of useful weapons to use against Vampires. I'm so happy Keith is still with us after giving us such a scare. I reckon that's his style though. :)

This year, Horror Club will be there again, along with the Kansas City Zombie walk for Hunger, and we'll be there for Director Patrick Ray's screenings, the Slash and Bash Short Film Contest, the screening of Bonnie and Clyde VS. Dracula (and Q&A with the filmmakers), and all the screenings, indoor and out!

Did we mention it's FREE? Because it's FREE. Which frees up some funds to get a room and throw a party.

We will start and end outside "The Break Room" between 9th and 10th street on Kansas Avenue, Topeka Kansas.

Participation requires a donation of FIVE non perishable food items, or a donation of five dollars (or more if you want to).

All food and monetary proceeds will benefit Topeka's "Let's Help." An organization "committed to working with individuals and families so that the cycle of poverty is broken and self-sufficiency is attained."

We'll collect your donation, mill about for a bit and go for a terrifying stroll that will likely horrify the young and fill absorbent undergarments of the old. Who knows, maybe we'll hit the capitol building and lobby for "Undead Rights."

There are rules of conduct, as I'm sure you are aware, and we'll get into that on the day, but the basics are, you're a zombie, but don't murder anybody!

The Tivoli in Westport

Horror Club is finally getting out into the world this Sunday to see this special HD feed of a live performance of Mary Shelly's "Frankenstein," newly adapted by Nick Dear, and Directed by Danny Boyle, who directed "Trainspotting," and that one where that dude cuts his own arm off.

The version we'll be seeing will feature Benedict Cumberbatch as Victor and Jonny Lee Miller as the Creature.

Those of you who watched the recent Sherlock Holmes series on PBS will recognize Benedict Cumberbatch, who played the title role. Die hard fans may have seen him in "To the Ends of the Earth," a hilariously awkward (at times) British mini series which also featured local actor Danelle Drury. See what I did there? I totally tied this back to our fair city. :)

Jonny Lee Miller will be easily recognizable from his performances in "Trainspotting," "Dracula 2000," and "Dexter."
